Walking in the Spirit is not good advice given to us as born-again Christians. It is a command from the Word of God and necessary for us to stay on the narrow path. Walking in the Spirit provides the fruit of the Spirit as listed in Galatians.
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-25
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:1-15

If we are involved in any of the works of the flesh without repentance, we will not see the kingdom of God according to this scripture. If we are not walking in the Spirit then we are not under grace. We are then under law, which means we will be judged by the law and not the grace of Jesus Christ. Walking in the Spirit is evidence of truly being born-again and baptized in the Holy Spirit (also known as receiving the Holy Ghost). You are saved when you are born again but you endure through walking in the Spirit after the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We know these are two separate thing by the instructions given us in Acts.
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38
After you repent and accept Jesus as your Savior which is becoming born-again or saved, then we are to be baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then we can receive the Holy Ghost (baptism of the Holy Spirit). When we receive the Holy Ghost, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit as listed in 1 Corinthians 12 that the Lord has assigned to us, as well as the full power and purpose God has for us.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. 1 Corinthians 12:4-14
There are many that will tell you that these gifts are dead. These are people that have not received these gifts because of one or more of several reasons:
- They doubt the gifts of the Holy Spirit
- They have never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit
- They do not believe the Holy Spirit operates today therefore pushing the gifts away
- They have listened to false doctrine that tells them these things aren't possible
- They do not believe scripture that states God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow and He doesn't change His promises
- They are afraid of the Holy Spirit and His power
- They are afraid of what other people will think about the miracles and power God will show through them
- They are afraid of fully surrendering their life in such a manner that God is in control instead of them.
- They are afraid they will have to give up worldly things they enjoy too much
- They are afraid of not being able to tell the difference between gifts of God and demonic activities
- and many more...
I am here to tell you I have seen these miracles, and allowed the Holy Spirit to perform them through me. God doesn't change. These gifts were meant for all of God's children until the day Jesus returns. The Holy Spirit working in us is vital. Every one of us is called to do greater works than Jesus. How do we know this? Jesus said so!
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12
These are only for those people that are born-again Christians already. No one that isn't a believer can receive the Holy Ghost.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:16-17
Those that do not bear the fruit of the Spirit will be cast into the fire. Those that walk in the Spirit will bear much fruit and the Holy Spirit will mold them to produce even more fruit.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:1-6
God wants us to have the baptism of the Holy Spirit so that we can listen to His voice, learn from Him, be comforted, and know truth. It is through the Holy Spirit that we discern what is of God and what is not.
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:23-24
Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: Acts 1:2
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 1:5
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4
These next verses are repeating what was also said in Joel 2:28-32. They are proof that these things weren't supposed to disappear with the apostles. These gifts of the Holy Spirit will go on until the sun goes black, the moon turns to blood and the day of the Lord comes when Jesus returns. The Holy Spirit won't stop operating until we are all called home. The gifts of tongues, prophecy, faith, discernment, knowledge, wisdom, healing, miracles, and interpretation of tongues will not stop operating or being given until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. It is repeated twice in scripture just so we understand that point.
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:17-21
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Acts 2:39
We are called to walk in the Spirit, to operate in the gifts and administrations God has assigned us. It is how we do battle in spiritual warfare. It is why we are given the armor of God. It is how we endure and keep from falling away, especially in times of persecution and trials. It is how we bear fruit and stand boldly, testifying the gospels across the world and fulfill the great commission without faltering. We must walk in the Spirit. To do that we must follow Acts 2:38 by becoming born-again, being baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son(Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit, and then we must willingly accept the gift of the Holy Ghost and not reject it.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:19
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? Acts 11:15-17
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. Acts 19:2
