Isn’t the Preacher Supposed to Do That?

When Christians are asked why they don't share the gospel, many answer with " Isn't the preacher supposed to do that? That's his job. I just invite people to church." There are some that answer "I do every chance I get." Most ignore the greatest command Jesus Christ gave to each one of us as disciples of Christ: the great commission. It is so important  every member of the church share the gospel with people in some way that it is commanded in multiple places and even put as a reminder after Jesus ascended.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.                        Mark 16:15-16

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.     Matthew 28:18-20

And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.   Luke 24:46-48

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  Acts 1:8

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.  2 Timothy 4:1-2

But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.  2 Timothy 4:5

And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.       Acts 10:42-43

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.      John 21:15-17

And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.  Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.   Matthew 10:7-8

As you can see here every disciple of Christ is assigned the great commission. We are all responsible for spreading the gospel. Some are just responsible for more teaching than others as in John 21 and Matthew 25.

For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.  And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.  Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.  And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.  But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.  After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.  And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.  His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.  He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.  His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.  Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.  His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  Matthew 25:14-30

We are expected to be workers in the field and prepare the harvest. To some of us the job is small by simply sharing the gospel every time you get a chance in your own life. For others, they are given a platform in which to reach quite a few people and teach the Word. Others still are given a great charge over a multitude of people to bring them to Christ and teach them how to walk. Every servant of the Lord is at least responsible for 1 talent and expected to do something with it. Don't bury your talent in the dirt. Let your light shine among men and declare Jesus Christ the Savior to as many as you can reach. You never know, that person you passed in the parking lot today may only have one shot at earing the gospel and it is you. Be bold for Christ and speak up. Don't be ashamed of Him and hide Him behind the closed doors of church and home. He is meant to be in every part of your life. Our job is not to get people into church to be saved. Church is where people that are saved come to worship. Our job is to get people saved and then into church. May God bless you and Jesus keep you.
