What Does Scripture Say about Halloween?

There are many Christians that celebrate Halloween, churches that hold parties or 'trunk or treats', or Christian organizations that sponsor costume contests or events. As disciples of Christ, we should always do what God's word commands us to do. There has been a debate among the body of Christ for a long time as to whether or not we should celebrate Halloween. Many say it's harmless fun, and many say it isn't. Let's look at scripture and see what it says about the subject.

First we must look at historical and modern evidence to determine what Halloween is and what it stands for. The origin of Halloween roots from the Gaelic festival Samhain, which was a pagan festival marking the end of the harvest.  It marked a time when spirits could cross from this world to the underworld easier. The people left food on the doorstep to appease them to "ensure" they and their animals survived the winter. The festival included many rituals that involved divination or witchcraft. In the 9th century the Catholic church fused a pagan festival into something else, to make it more acceptable, All Saint's Day on November 1. Even then it consisted of praying for the dead which cannot be helped in any way. As for trick or treating, the Irish adapted a tradition of guising into what we have today. They came to a person's house on Hallow's Eve and vandalized or destroyed the person's property. They could be bribed with food, money, or trinkets to skip someone's house. Thus the term trick or treat. Costumes originated due to the dead(demons/ghosts) that roamed the street. If one didn't want to be harmed they would dress up like something scary so as to fool the demons into passing them by, which shows fear of the devil.

Since the late 20th century, pagans and Wiccans have celebrated Samhain as not only a festival but their highest holy day. Satan worshippers also hold to this. Satan worshippers and Wiccans use this to strengthen their witchcraft and pagans use it to continue idol worship. Many ex-satan worshippers and ex-witches have testified to blood sacrifices of animals and humans, even infants, on this day. They have stated on this day they use the strength of spirits(demons) to cast powerful spells and curses against those trying to share God's message, the gospel, and that have wronged them. Then there are some witches that celebrate Halloween as a high holy day and it doesn't involve any sacrifice. Watch this video from Beth an ex-witch that gave her heart to Jesus then we will break down scripture.

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,  Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.     Ephesians 5:11-17

Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.   Jeremiah 10:1-2

Abstain from all appearance of evil.   1 Thessalonians 5:22

When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.  For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.        Deuteronomy 18:9-14

All of these verses show we should have nothing to do with anything evil. Halloween is most definitely evil. It is an idol worshipping holiday for witches, satanic cults, and other pagans. Halloween is the celebrated as their most high holy day. There are those that would say they don't participate for those reasons but just for fun. Read the next verse.

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.  The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?  For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.  Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?  What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?  But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.  Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.  Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?   1 Corinthians 10:14-22

Notice that the above verses say if you eat of the sacrifice (even though you weren't involved in the worship) then you were a partaker of the altar or worship as well. You don't have to intend to participate in the idol worship to be guilty of it. In other words there is no such thing as just for fun when it comes to celebrating Halloween. Any involvement in it at all is idol worship whether you intended it that way or not. You can't argue with scripture. If you celebrate Halloween, then you are celebrating evil period.

Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.     3 John 1:11

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?  And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.        2 Corinthian 6:14-17

Halloween yokes you in celebration with unbelievers and darkness. We are called to come out of the world not be part of its heathen traditions.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  Romans 12:2

Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.   Romans 12:9

We should not only not join in Halloween festivities but we should utterly hate it.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.   James 4:4

Celebrating Halloween puts us at enmity with God because we are a friend to the world and its pagan festivals.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.   Psalm 1:1

Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.  For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.  And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.  For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.  And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.    Mark 7:7-13

When you celebrate Halloween, you nullify the Word of God in your life. It causes you to worship God in vain because you choose to follow the traditions and doctrines of men that say this holiday is acceptable.

Neither give place to the devil.   Ephesians 4:27

These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.     2 Peter 2:17-20

Celebrating Halloween is listening and heeding the teaching and traditions of those that are still a slave to sin nature and the flesh. These whims cause those made clean by Christ to live in error with those that still live in sin. It gives the devil an open door and we aren't to give place to the devil.

As we can see, scripture says we cannot have something to do with Halloween "just for fun". It isn't innocent fun, but idol worship. As you know scripture also says you cannot serve two masters. By default everyone that doesn't belong to Jesus belongs to the devil. Also by default anyone that celebrates a pagan holiday is worshipping the devil, whether that is your intention or not. It is plainly written in the bible and those that disagree don't do so with us but with God's Word. God's Word is never wrong. As Christians we must not celebrate Halloween and must repent for doing so. Remember the lost 10 tribes of Israel? They are lost because they worshipped idols and false gods. God is merciful and loving and He will forgive.

Stand up for Jesus, even if you are the only one. Stand on His Word, not mans traditions. God bless you and may Jesus keep you.

  1. Thank you for your Message it was a good warning against Halloween or Helloween, yes it is very evil, I will look forward to following you and will return and read more of your messages.

Christian Love and Blessings – Anne.

  2. Sorry but I cannot follow you Amber, I was not aware that you were a Minister, Woman being Ordained and so being in Authority over Men is in disobedience to God’s guidelines as clearly shown in Scripture see link below. God will not Bless a Ministry that reaches out is in the Carnal flesh.

    Woman – https://freedomborn.wordpress.com/2015/06/23/woman-are-precious-to-god/

    In Christ’s Name – Anne.

  3. First know I am a minister not a pastor. Minister simply means servant of the Lord. We do have a man over the ministry as it says on the home page. With that said Joel 2:28-30 and Acts 2:17-18 days in this time men and women sons and daughters will have the Holy Spirit poured out on them. When the Holy Spirit tells you to do something, you don’t tell Him no I can’t. There is nothing wrong with a woman spreading God’s Word. The bible doesn’t say women cannot teach anyone about God. A woman can teach but shouldn’t ursup authority over her husband. She shouldn’t be the final authority in a church. That’s why we have a male bishop. If I need correcting there is a man over me to do so.

  4. It is good to hear your not a Ordained Minister in the Church Amber, if you read my Post you would see I’m in agreement with you, Woman can share God’s Truth in their God given role. The Holy Spirit will not lead a Man or a Woman to do what God forbids in Scripture and woman in Leadership both in the Church or in Marriage is forbidden by God.

Neither the Male or the female Role is Superior or Inferior just different and was from Creation, I feel it is a protection for us as Woman, we are the weaker vessel and how wonderful that we are to be Loved as Christ Loves The Church.

We are all called to rebuke, correct and warn but my comment was promoted I’m sorry by a lack of knowledge, I didn’t have time to check your whole Blog Amber and it is not clarified in your About but mostly being called a Minister usually means your Ordained, saying your in Ministry can’t be mistaken for this.

I have encountered Woman much more than once who ignore God’s guidelines and are very aggressive in their denial of them in Scripture. In a well known Translation of the Scriptures although their first Translation was correct, a Man’s name was changed to a Woman, inferring it was OK for Woman to be an Anointed Apostle which means they would have been in authority over Men in the Church.

God bless you and your Ministry greatly – Anne.

  5. I am ordained, but I do have a man over me. I only attend to roles allowed to me in the scripture. I have a leadership role but not one that oversteps. The Lord has blessed me with a great bible study group of women that I teach and I and ministry partners run the ministry with approval of our bishop Cliff Randle. I perform baptisms of the ladies and other tasks that the Lord allows me to take on in these last days under Acts 2 and Joel 2. The bible shows us that there were women that prophesied, deaconesses, teachers and other such jobs of leadership roles in the church. Though it states a man should be the head, in marriage and the church. My husband is the head of our house and our bishop is the head over me in church affairs.

  6. I don’t see your Ordination Amber as one that is apposed to God’s guidelines, it is more like an Anointing for the Ministry roles you have, if you Preached in Authority over Men like some other Woman do or was an Elder in the Church, you would be in error but your not.

I also have had Leadership roles in the Church all under the Authority of the Pastors and Elders of the Churches I went to and have Lead in other Woman’s Ministries too.

I also started and Lead a Christian Weight Control Group for 20 years, I had 7 Leaders throughout N.S.W and many Woman over the years attended the Groups and were successful in weight loss but more importantly in valuing themselves as being woman of worth, a lot like me had either been Physically or emotionally Abused. In all of my Ministries I have felt very Blessed to be able to share God’s Truth or offer His Love and Care.

I repeat Amber, God bless you and your Ministries greatly – Anne.
