Wordle in Other Languages: Spanish, French, Hindi and Global Versions

Quote

The gameplay of Wordle is simple and does not rely on any specific cultural elements. As long as a language contains enough words in a certain length, the game can be played in any language. Since 2022, there have been many Wordle variations made in different languages.

Why Wordle can be Localised

While Wordle is usually a 5-letter English word based game, it can also be played in any language as long as you have;

A word of a fixed length (usually between 4-6 letters)

Enough words of the same length

A keyboard to type on for that language

As many languages have these requirements, many variations have been developed to offer the same experience as an English based Wordle, just using words from the country.

Spanish – Wordle ES

Wordle in Spanish is commonly referred to as Wordle ES or Wordle en Español. This version uses 5-letter Spanish words and allows the target words and guesses to include special characters such as á, é, í, ó, ú, ü and ñ.

As there are plenty of 5-letter words in Spanish, this gives a large amount of answers. Spanish Wordle has a very active community in Latin America and Spain. There are multiple sites offering a competition between players to find the daily Spanish Wordle word.

French – Le Mot

In French it is known as Le Mot which translates to The Word. This version uses 5-letter French words. The game uses special characters, such as é, è, ê and à and ç. Due to how French works grammatically, there are some slight differences. French has more inflected verbs and adjectives. However, the game still works well.

This game became very popular in France and other French speaking countries such as Canada, Belgium and Switzerland. You get one puzzle a day and can share your results grid.

Hindi + South Asian Wordles

Wordle in Hindi uses Devanagari script. Usually the word length and structure will be changed to better fit the syllable structure of Hindi. As the syllable structure of Hindi works differently to letters in the Latin alphabet, some versions use Romanised Hindi so there are no issues with typing.

There are many different versions available for other South Asian languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi.

Other notable versions

Italian – Parole means words in Italian. This version uses 5-letter Italian words. This version has a large amount of players every day.

Portuguese – Termo. This has a strong community in Brazil and Portugal.

German – Wördl and similar. This version uses 5-letter German words.

Swedish, Dutch and Polish – These have been developed by individual developers.

Hebrew and Arabic – These versions have been created to work with right to left script. This means the grid is flipped.

Wordle as a learning tool

Many people learning a language have taken up the foreign language versions of Wordle as a way to learn new vocabulary. Even if you cannot figure out what the answer is, you will see what words are valid in that language. This actively tests your spelling skills. Many teachers teaching Spanish, French and German as a foreign language have used the relevant Wordle versions in their teaching. There are also unlimited versions similar to Wordle Unlimited.

Differences between versions

Some differences between the different language versions of Wordle are;

Word length – Some languages use 4 or 6 letter words

Special characters – Some languages use accented characters and diacritics. This means the keyboard will need to be adjusted.

Fewer answers – Some languages do not have as many words.

Most versions are fan-made.

The Wordle game on the NYT site is only available in English. All international versions have been developed by individuals who saw the potential for this game to be played in many languages.

  1. The Hebrew midwives feared God and told Pharaoh the mothers gave birth before they could arrived. God rewarded them with homes.

  2. “But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live. So king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, ‘Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?’ And the midwives said to Pharaoh, ‘Because the Hebrew woman are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and they give birth before the midwife can get to them.’ So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. And it came about because the midwives feared God, that He established households for them. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, ‘Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.’”

  3. 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

    18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

    19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

    20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

    21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
